Abstract 內容簡介 :
The rise of early modern Spanish American poetry is a consequence of the colonisation of the New World. Since the early years of the sixteenth century, Spain deployed to America an increasing contingent of settlers, both lay and religious, who brought with them institutions, policies, weapons and cultural traditions. The empire was to take root in these new lands with the double intention of evangelising its native inhabitants and exploiting its natural resources, especially precious metals. The subjugation of sophisticated civilizations such as the Inca in the Andes and the Mexica in Mesoamerica stimulated the growth of the viceroyalties of Peru and New Spain, and particularly of their capital cities, Lima and Mexico City. Alongside these great cities there we others based on the fringes of the empire, such as Buenos Aires. In this talk we will focus on three authors who composed foundational poems Luis de Miranda, Bernardo de Balbuena and Pedro de Oña.
Speaker Profile 講者簡介:
Rodrigo Cacho's research focuses mainly on Renaissance and Baroque cultures and Spanish-American colonial literature. His recent writings have been concerned with literary genres such as burlesque and epic poetry, and the works of Francisco de Quevedo. They also treat aspects related to the transmission of culture in Early Modern Europe, including interdisciplinary approaches such as theory of painting and the art of memory. These last are studied particularly in his latest book La esfera del ingenio: las silvas de Quevedo y la tradición europea (Madrid: Biblioteca Nueva, 2012). The relationship between art and literature is another area of his research, with a particular interest in painters such as Velázquez and Valdés Leal. He also works on Colonial poetry, especially on the emergence of a new American poetics with authors such as Bernardo de Balbuena and Pedro de Oña. He has recently co-edited a volume on Golden Age poetry Los géneros poéticos del Siglo de Oro. He has been awarded a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship (January to December 2015) and is currently preparing a monograph on Spanish-American colonial poetry.
